What should I do if indoor hardware was installed outside—or outdoor hardware was installed inside?
The best correction for indoor hardware outdoors is replacement with hardware and fasteners approved for the actual exposure. If immediate replacement is not possible, reducing direct rain, sun, salt, and standing moisture may slow deterioration, but it does not create an exterior rating or guarantee performance. Ask the manufacturer what maintenance is permitted and plan the replacement.
If outdoor and indoor versions are mixed inside, compare their appearance before installation. Where the pieces are visually compatible, placing the more durable version in the highest-use locations may be sensible, but document the difference and explain that wear may not remain identical.
