How to Install Cabinet Handles

Installation turns a selection into a repeated detail. The line that seemed settled on a drawing now depends on a jig, a drill, a screw and the material beneath the finish. A complete first installation is worth the pause: it reveals problems while they still belong to one front rather than an entire kitchen.

What needs to be ready before drilling?

The approved position, exact center-to-center spacing and correct screw length establish the setup. A rigid jig registered to the agreed cabinet edge or centerline carries that position between matching fronts. A scrap test proves the holes against the actual handle, followed by one agreed representative front. Existing holes need the same scrutiny; earlier drilling is evidence of a previous installation, not proof of the desired position.

What should the first completed handle demonstrate?

The bases should sit flat, the line should agree with neighboring fronts and the grip should remain comfortable through the full opening movement. A clamped backing block supports the drill's exit surface and helps reduce tear-out. Hardware and jig instructions govern the drilling, with controlled hand tightening for the final fit. A gap or loose piece calls for investigation rather than more force.

How is a poor fit diagnosed and corrected?

Crookedness may come from layout or jig orientation; looseness may come from screw length, damaged threads, weak material or an uneven base. Comparing the complete mounting with the product drawing separates those causes. A correction may involve the proper fastener, an approved repair, a backplate or a replacement part. Once one installation is secure and comfortable, the other fronts made with the same jig and screws need checking for the same fault.
