How to Build Word of Mouth

A client describing a room to a friend will rarely use the designer's vocabulary. The remembered detail may be simpler: the drawer finally clears the corner, or the chosen pull feels right in the hand. A recommendation travels more easily when the work has a real story that can be told plainly.

Leave the client with a detail they can explain

Illustrative project: at handover, a client asks why one drawer has a different pull length. The designer points to the wider front, explains the comparison they approved and leaves the final schedule with the care notes. The client now has a specific choice to describe and a record to use later.

What makes the story easy to repeat?

A specific choice and its consequence are enough. A comparison of two lengths on the same drawer can explain why one was selected without a lecture on proportion. The explanation needs to arise from the actual project; a signature detail manufactured solely for a referral story adds performance rather than meaning. A short permissioned project account can preserve the useful context.

When is an introduction appropriate?

Working doors and drawers, understood open items and delivered care information establish the service behind the request. An unresolved replacement needs attention before advocacy is sought. Once the client expresses satisfaction, an optional introduction with a short project link and contact details is straightforward. A recommendation should not require the client to explain a complicated brochure or defend unfinished service.

How is the referring person's trust protected?

The new inquiry needs accurate expectations about services and availability. A thank-you can acknowledge the introduction without revealing private details of the new project. A simple record of suitable inquiries helps identify useful connections, but an introduction is not a guaranteed commission. Consistent service to the next person is what sustains the original recommendation.

Project-specific decision

Know where general guidance stops.

A referral count alone cannot show whether recommendations produced suitable or well-served customers.

  • Record the introduction source, permission, customer need, fit, and promised follow-up.
  • Protect the recommender with prompt response and accurate expectations.
  • Measure referred inquiry quality, conversion, customer outcome, and repeat advocacy over time.
