How to Clean Brass Cabinet Hardware Without Damaging Its Finish

Start by identifying the surface
A dark patch on brass might be dirt, natural patina, an intentional part of the finish or damage to a coating. Reaching for polish before knowing which one it is can turn a small mark into a much larger problem.
Find the care information for the exact finish you ordered. Solid brass describes the underlying material; it does not tell you whether that surface has lacquer, an applied colour or another protective treatment. Brass-coloured plating needs its own instructions as well.
Begin with the least intervention
Remove loose dust with a clean, soft cloth. If the maker permits damp cleaning, use the specified mild cleaner sparingly on the cloth rather than spraying the cabinet. Wipe away any permitted cleaning residue and dry the piece promptly, keeping moisture away from joints and the surrounding cabinet finish.
Do not assume soaking is appropriate. A handle can contain several materials, and water can remain in recesses or around fixings. Removing hardware is useful only when it is needed and you can reinstall it correctly; it is not a requirement for every routine clean.
Keep polish away from finishes it is not meant to treat
Metal polish is not a general-purpose cleaner for anything that looks brass. It may remove or alter a lacquered, plated or deliberately aged surface. Abrasive pads and improvised acidic mixtures can cause similar problems.
For confirmed unlacquered brass, decide whether you want to retain its changing colour before discussing polishing. Patina is not automatically a defect. If you do want a brighter appearance, follow the hardware maker’s guidance and use only a treatment appropriate to that bare-metal finish.
Do not chase a stubborn mark with stronger products
If a gentle, permitted clean does not remove a mark, stop and inspect it in good light. A worn coating will not become intact through more rubbing. Photograph the area and ask for finish-specific advice before using a brush, solvent or stronger cleaner.
For mixed-material hardware, consider every component. Instructions suitable for the metal may be unsuitable for leather, acrylic or another decorative element.
Make everyday care easier
Wipe accidental splashes promptly and keep general cabinet or bathroom cleaning products off the hardware unless their use is expressly permitted. A soft cloth reserved for the pieces avoids transferring abrasive residue from other cleaning tasks.
The aim is to preserve the finish you chose, including its intended variation. A bright, uniform shine is only the right outcome when it belongs to that particular surface.
