KBIS 2024: Questions Worth Bringing to a Design Show

Current design reference: Chloe, Solid Brass Greek Key Pull in several finishes. This product image accompanies the original KBIS announcement; it is not an event photograph.

There is a difference between leaving a design show with photographs and leaving with decisions that can move a project forward. A striking handle is easy to remember. Its mounting requirements, available finish and realistic delivery information are easier to lose in the next conversation.

This article originally looked ahead to KBIS 2024. The show has since taken place; the organizer records February 27–29, 2024 in Las Vegas. The questions below retain the planning purpose without presenting old predictions as forthcoming events or claiming a firsthand show report.

Ask what the new idea changes

A novel shape, a concealed grip and a technology-led opening system solve different problems. Before treating any as an improvement, establish what changes for the user and what the cabinet must accommodate. A compelling demonstration is a beginning for that discussion.

For decorative hardware, usable grip, projection and mounting details remain central. For a mechanism, the relevant installation and service requirements need separate documentation. Appearance should not blur the distinction between the two.

Bring the finish back to the room

A display can make a metal color look particularly rich or a texture unusually crisp. A sample and an exact finish name provide a more useful reference than a photograph alone. The comparison should eventually take place beside the project's actual cabinetry and neighboring materials.

It is also worth asking whether the pictured finish is available on the exact size and product under consideration. A collection display can include combinations that should not be assumed interchangeable.

Turn broad claims into specific information

An environmental claim should identify its evidence and scope. A custom option should identify what can change and what requires feasibility review. A delivery discussion should distinguish stock information from an agreed project commitment.

These details are not obstacles to inspiration. They explain whether an attractive idea can become an appropriate specification.

Leave with a usable record

A short record of the product, finish, intended location and unresolved question helps the project team continue the conversation. Where a sample or drawing is needed, that should be clear before a selection is treated as complete.

The lasting value of a show is not the number of trends collected. It is a better understanding of which new possibilities answer the room's needs and what still has to be checked before they can be used.
