Choosing Cabinet Hardware Size by Fit and Proportion

Two pulls can share mounting holes and still make a cabinet look quite different. One may extend beyond its fixing points; another may have a broader grip or taller feet. The measurement used to order hardware therefore needs more context than a single number.
Start with the dimension that cannot move
On an existing cabinet, the distance between hole centers may already be fixed. That center-to-center measurement must agree with the selected pull unless repair or a different mounting arrangement is planned. It describes the holes, not the width of the door or the full length of the handle.
For new cabinetry, there is more freedom to establish the position, but the front's construction still imposes limits. A narrow frame, an inset panel or an obstruction behind the face can affect where the hardware may be attached.
Judge the visible size against the front
A knob has a visible width or diameter and a projection; a pull adds a line across the surface. Their apparent size depends on both shape and finish. A broad bright face may look more prominent than a longer, thinner grip with a quieter reflection.
Small hardware is not a requirement for a modern room, and ornate cabinetry does not automatically need a large handle. The more useful question is whether the hardware has enough presence to look intentional without crowding the cabinet's own details.
Make room for the hand
The clearance behind a pull determines how fingers can reach it. That usable space is not always the same as the product's overall projection. A drawing helps establish the geometry; a sample shows whether the movement feels comfortable.
A frequently used drawer deserves that physical check, especially when its contents or operation demand a firmer grip. A size chosen solely from a photograph can miss the reason the handle is there.
Record the choice by location
A room can use one suitable size throughout or a small group of related sizes. Recording the intended location, exact variant and mounting measurement prevents an attractive large pull from being substituted into a place it cannot fit.
