How to Choose Edge Pulls

An edge pull can nearly disappear into the cabinetry, leaving little more than a line of metal. That quiet appearance depends on precise relationships behind it: the thickness of the front, the reveal and the space available to a hand.

What determines whether an edge pull fits?

Its mounting edge, front thickness, edge profile and the gap between fronts establish the available space. Some models need routing; others use surface screws. Those requirements belong with the fabricator before the fronts are made. The exact sample should provide sufficient grip as well as the intended shadow line, especially on heavy drawers or tall doors.

What happens as the front opens?

The pull travels with the door or drawer, so clearance while closed is only part of the answer. Corners, neighboring panels and appliances may intersect its movement. A full-travel test reveals those conflicts, while a view across the elevation shows whether lengths and reveals form a consistent line. Both affect the apparent simplicity of the finished detail.

What should happen if the edge begins to bind or fail?

Rubbing, splitting, compression or movement around the fasteners needs investigation before continued use. The cause may be the screw, the material near the edge or an incompatible clearance. An approved repair, different mounting position, suitable size or another hardware type may be required. One corrected front should establish secure operation and adjacent clearances before the change is repeated.

A worked example

A top-mounted edge pull on an upper door and a top-mounted pull on the drawer below can collide at the reveal; model both profiles through the opening path.

What should be true before you move on?
