How to Make a Product Catalog

A catalog often reaches a project before a conversation does. The photograph attracts attention, but the surrounding information decides whether the piece can be understood, compared and ordered. Good editing makes the differences visible without asking every product to tell the whole company story.

How should the products be organized?

The reader's decision provides the useful order: type, dimensions, finish or application may matter more than an internal collection sequence. Consistent image scale, naming and measurement fields support comparison. Changing price and availability belong apart from enduring product facts. Units are essential; an unlabeled dimension can turn a precise drawing into an ambiguous instruction.

What gives the catalog authority?

Current first-party product records should support specifications and claims, with permission and credit for imagery. A repeatable page structure leaves space to explain relevant differences rather than repeat generic praise. Version and contact information provide a route for questions. Relationships between pieces earn editorial space when they help the reader choose, not simply because every page has an empty caption box.

How should inaccurate information be corrected?

An unreliable version needs to leave active circulation or be clearly identified while a complete dated correction is prepared. Related variants, dimensions, finish names, links and availability claims need checking together. Recipients of an inaccurate copy should understand what changed and whether it affects their decision. An owner and review date help keep future editions from quietly becoming obsolete.

The Design Practice

The application depends on the actual professional task and evidence available.

A worked example

A pull page should use the same fields and image scale as every other pull page, while price and availability come from maintained data rather than being frozen in an old PDF.

What should be true before you move on?

A versioned catalog system with consistent naming, imagery, dimensions, finish data, source links, ordering fields, and ownership.
